Who is Humayun Ahmed (হুমায়ূন আহমেদ)?

If you are a Bangladeshi you already know about Humayun Ahmed. But for all the other people or if you in case don’t know about him, i am writing a short bio on him.

He (হুমায়ূন আহমেদ) is a great novelist of Bangladesh. He was born on 13 November 1948 in Kutubpur, Netrokona. Not only is novelist also work on the other branches of literature like, Short Story, Songs, Play and more. He also wrote and directed some well known films in Bangladesh. 

He Ahmed wrote more than 200 books in his career. His first novel was published in 1972 and it was, Nondito Noroke while he was a university student.

He studied in University of Dhaka and graduated from the department of Chemistry and then he went to the USA to obtain his Phd. After coming back to Bangladesh he devoted himself to writing and creating literary works.

In personal life Humayun Ahmed first married Gultekin Khan in 1973. From Gultekin he had three daughters, Nova Ahmed, Sheila Ahmed, Bipasha Ahmed and one son, Nuhash Humayun. Then he was married to Meher Afroz Shaon in 2004. Shaon had two sons with Humayun Ahmed, Nishad Humayun and Ninith Humayun.

• Amra Kaw Basay Nai (আমরা কেউ বাসায় নেই)

Togor and Monju are two brothers. Their Father is a university lecturer. The house they lived in now Monju’s father and his friend once bought it together. After his (Monju’s father friend) death his father named the land after his own name.

Wife and daughter Padma of his father’s friend came to them several times to claim their portion of the land but Monju’s father did nothing.

Togor brings Padma and her mother to their house. Afterwards many issues start arising. But Togor has nothing to look after, he is leading his life without caring anything.

• Ak Jon Mayaboti (একজন মায়াবতী)

This book is about Mira and Monju. Mira is the daughter of a rich man. But They love each other and decide to marry. After marriage many difficulties come to their life. And unfortunately, Mira decides to divorce Monju and go back to her father. It is one of the great books by Humayun Ahmed.

• Tetul Bone Jochna (তেতুল বনে জোছনা)

This book is about Anis, a village doctor and his beautiful wife. Anis once lived in the City but for some reason he shifted to his village and start his medical practice there. But his wife was a city girl. He loves her so much. But with the passing of time their life becomes difficult in the village.

Shuvro is a pure human being. He doesn’t know much about the outside world. He is totally unable to do any wrong or unethical work. His father is a very rich man. He only lives with good things and great values. He is a genius in physics but for his father he is a stupid who doesn’t know anything.

A You Engineer comes to a village to build a bridge. There he started to live in the Station master’s house. And he falls in love with the girl who is a relative of the station master. One day He was accused of killing a Chinese engineer by the police.

• Debi (দেবী) & Nishithini (নিশীথিনী)

Debi and Nushithini both books are two different parts of the same story. These are the books of the Misir Ali series. The story is based on a girl Ranu who has some supernatural power and often does paranormal activities.

• Choitrer Ditio Dibosh (চৈত্রের দ্বিতীয় দিবস)

If I start writing a list of my favorite Humayun Ahmed books name then this will be one of them. The story is about Farhad and Asmani. Farhad is a Middle class boy who loves Asmani a lot. 

Farhad’s life was full of difficulties and on the other hand his love Asmani is a cancer patient and about to die soon. But Asmani is mad for Farhad, his only dream to become his wife at least for one day before she dies.

• Ak Jon Mayaboti (একজন মায়াবতী)

Again I am suggesting this book for young adult peoples. This is a book worth reading. The story of  MIra and Monju will blow you. Theirs after marriage difficulties and divorce Monju and go back to Mira’s father house will make you sad. One of the great books by Humayun Ahmed.

• Nondito Noroke (নন্দিত নরকে)

This Fiction is about a urban lower middle class family who deals with their life with lots of sufferings. Here is a strong mother character portrait by the author who often misbehaves with her children. Actually She was teaching her children about the difficult scenario of life where they may need to live without love and affection or any parental care.

• Deyal (দেয়াল)

Deyal is a political history written based on the socio economic situation and present scenario of 1971. You will find some ongoing situations and very discussed phenomena of Bangladesh’s history in this book. The author tries to portray the socio economic and political situation and their real face in this book. It is one of the masterpieces by Humayun Ahmed.

• Badshah Namdar (বাদশাহ নামদার)

It is a Historical Fiction laid on Mughal Badsha Humayun Mirza. If you want to lose yourself into the history, culture, family politics and of the Mughal Empire and want to give a little dive into the personal life of Badsha Humayun then it is the best book for you. • Mrinmoyee (মৃন্ময়ী)

The main character of this fiction is Mrinmoyee. She is a very unusual person. She can take any kind of situation even doesn’t care about anything happening around her. One sudden murder occurs in the story and police come to Mrinmoi’s house. Story becomes more interesting from here.

• Dui Duari (দুই দুয়ারী)

A very mysterious person comes to a middle class family, he even can’t remember who he is? Where does he come from? But this man can make easy solutions to any complex problems. On the other hand Toru, daughter of this family falls in love with a talented boy but suddenly his bad and dangerous past comes out.

• Asmanira Tin Bon (আসমানীরা তিন বোন)

This fiction is based on neglected women of our society. There are three sisters named Asmani, Jamdani, and Poysha. Their father Jomir Ali is a lazy beggar. One day their mother Asia left them with their father and she went somewhere else. 

One day Jomir Ali gets news that Asia travels to India and then he also travels to India to find his wife back. But unfortunately Jomir Ali was caught by the Indian police. And the three sisters remain all alone in this terrible society. 

• Lilaboti (লীলাবতী)

Siddikur Rahman is a landlord. He is a very powerful and rich person. His 2nd wife is gone mad now. His family became old and his family life now became terrible. And at that time Lila comes to his life. Lila was his daughter from first wife. 

Lila had strong negative feelings about her father. She thought his father is the most Cruel person in the world. And she had evil feelings for her father. In the forwarding phases in the story we see that Siddikur’s life become more terrible his only son suicide and he goes to jail. But What happens in the end?

Lilaboti is another masterpiece of Humayun Ahmed.

• Choitrer Ditio Dibosh (চৈত্রের দ্বিতীয় দিবস)

As I said before say If I start writing a list of my favorite Humayun Ahmed books name then this will be one of them. So I will definitely suggest his book is also for the university level readers. It is one of Humayun Ahmed best romantic books.

The story of Farhad and Asmani will make you feel for them. Their love and difficulties will make a hit on your heart. Read this book soon. It is worth reading.

Humayun Ahmed Books For More Mature Reader

This section is for the more mature readers who already read a lot. They could be university students or any of the people who keep a good taste in fiction & non fiction. 

Though Humayun Ahmed does not really write very much for the actual mature readers. But he has some good works that everybody should. Humyaun Ahmed wrote some masterpieces that you should read in your life. Some of those books I am going to suggest here. 

• Chader Aloy Koyekjon Jubok (চাঁদের আলোয় কয়েকজন যুবক)

On an ordinary night some of the friends meet each other but not for hangout but for discussing and sharing the life struggle and depression. They were casually walking on the street and suddenly they met with a Gentleman named Mirza. Mirza becomes curious about the boys and starts following them. Then many things start happening with them on that night.

• Deyal (দেয়াল)

Here I will again suggest Deyal for the mature readers. Deyal is such an informative and good book. It is one of the great creations of the Author. 

This is a political history written based on the socio economic situation and present scenario of 1971. I already mentioned it in the upper section. It’s really a must read among the Humayun Ahmed books.

• Aguner Porosh Moni (আগুনের পরশমণি)

The story is based on the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971. It was the time when the Pakistan Army was capturing Dhaka. And Mukti Bahini tried to defend them. In this situation a young man named Alom came to Motin’s house as a guest. He actually came here to make a plan to destroy the Pakistan Army from Dhaka. 

Motin has two daughters, one name is Ratri and another one name is Opla. 

• Bela Obela (বেলা অবেলা)

Bela Obela is not actually a fiction, you may consider it as a non fiction. Bela Obela is a group of 10 selective autobiographies of Humayun Ahmed written by himself. Mr. Ahmed writes about himself in different books. Like Ballpoint, Amr Choto bela, Hotel Graver inn and many more. This Book is a plenary of all his autobiographies.

• Boka Bhu (বোকাভূ)

The story is about a baby ghost. He is very foolish. He doesn’t act like other ghost babies. He doesn’t fight with anybody or doesn’t disturb anybody. Often he remains very careless and seems alienated.
